El Trofeo Torretes fue creado en 1975 y inicialmente se trataba de un concurso fotográfico de ámbito local. Con los años, pasó a ser de ámbito estatal y finalmente, en 2006, además de pasar a formar parte de los actos del Festimatge – Festival de la Imagen de Calella, se convirtió en Internacional.
La característica esencial durante la mayor parte de los años de vida del «Torretes» fue que había que participar no con obras fotográficas individuales sino con colecciones de 3 fotografías, siendo de este modo pionero entre los concursos de fotografía. Con la adaptación del concurso a las normas FIAP, se dejó de lado las colecciones para pasar a concursar en categorías (color, monocromo libre, tema tradicones, …) y en formato digital, enriqueciendo notablemente la participación de autores de todo el mundo.
